its been a long first week of school, and i am glad it is over. i am just taking this time now to recover from my flu… well, i dont know if it was the flu, but it was unpleasant and debilitating nonetheless. good news is, i like all my classes, and my teachers are even better. the comics classes get pretty geeky at times, but i can already tell that these are going to be my clear favorites…. biggest bit of assurance? professor’s assigning us comic books as required reading, including Watchmen and Batman Year 1.
funny thing happened in Writing for Comics today. our professor, Daniel Cooney, is this really cool dude who in some ways never really left college mentally. for our in-class assignment, he decides to hand us lollipops, and asks us to write a one-paragraph first-person account of the experience… but the catch, was that we had to write from the perspective of a specific CHARACTER. as an example Cooney said, “how would BATMAN eat a lollipop?”
by all accounts, i would have jumped all over this immediately had i been at 100% full health, but since i was just about clinically dead physically, and my demeanor wasnt much better, i was kind of sour about it, and kind of dilly-dallyed until the last minute.
finally i decided to go with my sinister humor instincts and picked Hitler.
come sharing time, im the last person to read aloud my thing aloud. upon telling the classroom who i’d picked, it got a few laughs, but Cooney probably got the biggest kick out of it, as he crossed his arms and began shaking his head in amusement.
“you know what, jon, that is just too weird.”
“yeah, why’s that?”
“today is actually the 75th anniversary of when Hitler came to power.”
“….you’re JOKING.”
entire classroom erupts in hyena-like laughter. i was kind of in shock, to be honest, because i dont think ive ever been able to tell a Hitler joke in such flawless context. so anyways. i read my short first person essay, and had i not been sick, i wouldve done it in a bad hitler accent too, as i noticed some people did theirs in character. regardless, it was just a very amusing incident, and it gave me a good feeling about the class.
